The cross-country season came to a close on the train back from Lugano last Saturday. With three medals in four races at the Lugano invitational as well as two medals and two team trophies at the SGIS (Swiss Group of International Schools) Championships, it was a very productive season.
Things began in Zurich on Saturday the 3rd of October at the SGIS Championships. In both the boy’s category B and C races the Dragons came away with the second place trophy losing to ZIS (Zurich International School). Unfortunately Basel did not field enough athletes to compete in any of the other categories. A strong individual performance by Ella saw her win the Category A girls race, destroying the rest of the field with the closest runner over a minute behind her. In the Category A Boys race Miles came close to winning, losing the race by only a few seconds on the final hill to a runner from ZIS.
Two weeks later it was back on the road to Lugano and The American School in Switzerland (TASIS). On Friday afternoon the Dragons competed in a fun run before spending a night in a hotel. The next morning the team traveled to the TASIS campus for the races. In the middle school boys race Basel placed third, fourth and fifth, with Rhys claiming the bronze medal at the finish by holding off his teammates on the final hill. The middle school girl’s race saw Basel runner Serene finish in second place and in the high school girls, Elizabeth recovered from her disappointment of missing out on the medals at the SGIS Championships to finish in third.
After a successful, albeit short, season a significant amount of credit must be given to the coaches, Coach da Ponte and Coach Drozda. They did an excellent job of training and pushing the runners, resulting in a triumphant season.
